Delane Fitzgerald is an accomplished college football coach that has led many programs to success in the past. His love of football started at an early age. He was playing sports since he was a child. This would develop into a full-time career after he finished college at the Potomac State College and James Madison University respectively. After he finished his own football career, he would go on to teach others how to play the game. This turned out to be his calling, as the coach would go on to win many awards for his dedication and contributions to football programs. He won the “John David Kraus Leadership Award” as well as the “Southern Virginia University Coach of the Year” award respectively. However, Delane isn’t just a good coach, but a good mentor as well, one that helps build character in his players.
One of the things that Delane Fitzgerald finds important is the character development of his players. He wants them to leave college with an understanding of the outside world and the skills to succeed. That is why when he is not coaching them to improve their athletic ability, he is helping them cultivate their academic strength as well. Not stopping there, he helps teach his players skills and values such as loyalty, discipline, accountability, responsibility, and punctuality. He wants each of his players to grow, learn the value of things like integrity, compassion, and teamwork. Delane doesn’t just want his players to win football games, he wants them to win at life as well.
One of Delane Fitzgerald’s goals as a college football coach is to teach his players how to become productive members of society. He says that “My greatest achievement is seeing the light come on for a young man. Seeing someone change their life.” While he loves the game of football, and has one of the most competitive spirits around, Delane always makes sure to teach his players the value of compassion and understanding. He wants his players to know that football is meant to bring people together through the spirit of friendly competition.
