Dawayne D Butler was born on March 9th, in 1965 to his two loving parents. Though Butler's father died young, he still left quite an impression on Butler, who was left to help take care of his younger brothers with the help of his mother. Though it was hard, Butler says, it was a learning experience, a sort of coming of age that every boy must go through to transition to a man. Butler says it was these experiences in his youth that would mold him into the man he is today.

Butler's time on the Bering Sea was mostly spent helping to mentor the less experienced crew members. It was with Butler's guidance that these green men would grow into the seasoned fisherman they are today.
