Darrell MacLean is the president of Southern Middlesex Industries, Inc., or SMI. Darrell MacLean has proudly served as president of SMI for over twenty years. Darrell MacLean has overseen a top-notch team to safely and discreetly remove any contaminants from various buildings. Darrell MacLean, through SMI, oversees asbestos abatement, building demolition, PCB remediation, selective interior demolition, general contracting, mold remediation, hazmat waste removal, and lead abatement.

In 2007, there was a three alarm fire at the East Sommerville Community School in the middle of the night. By morning the fire patrol had it under control, but the damage was extensive, and 585 students had to be re-housing in alternative buildings. School and city officials were baffled about what to do.

SMI was eventually given the work order to go in, clean up and stabilize the building; however, it was not until 2009 that Darrell MacLean and his team could get in to start the stabilization process. Darrell MacLean comments, “The building was in a terrible state. SMI was asked to be the general contractor for the selective demolition and abatement of burned and dangerous building materials. We knew this would not be simple, and that we would have to tap into our 25 years of experience and expertise to accomplish the task.”

Darrell MacLean and SMI certainly had their work cut out for them. SMI was tasked with removing burned and warped steel and replacing it with new steel. A new roof deck had to be installed, along with the construction of a brand new roof. A temporary wall also had to be installed to ensure the integrity of the structure for the next phase of work.

It was hard work, but Darrell MacLean and his team finished it with professionalism and efficiency none-the-less. Funds have now been raised, and thanks to the work of Darrell MacLean and SMI, rebuilding can now begin.
