Chelsea Marie Berns Recognized for Her Teaching Excellence

Chelsea Marie Berns received the 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award for Iowa State University, and speaks out about the importance of innovation in the classroom.

 
Chelsea Marie Berns is an individual who has always excelled in the classroom. In 2013, Chelsea Marie Berns graduated with her Ph.D. from Iowa State University in ecology and evolutionary biology. During her time at ISU, Chelsea Marie Berns served as a mentor, teaching assistant, research supervisor, sole creator of a new course, and lecturer. After gaining teaching experience, Chelsea Marie Berns became aware of her natural ability and enthusiasm working as an educator. “I possess extensive experience in both research and teaching. I believe that my experience as a student throughout my Ph.D. program helps me better relate to students and provide them with quality knowledge and expertise in biology. I am driven and dedicated to being the best teacher and mentor for undergraduate students,” expressed Chelsea Marie Berns.

Colleagues and students agree that Chelsea Marie Berns serves as an educator of the highest quality. In 2012, Chelsea Marie Berns was a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award at Iowa State University Graduate College. Chelsea Marie Berns was honored to receive this distinguished award and indicated her elation. “I am extremely pleased and honored to be a recipient of this award,” said Chelsea Marie Berns. “I discovered my passion for teaching and mentoring students when I came to graduate school, and I am so thrilled that others have been helped by my enthusiasm.” Chelsea Marie Berns is known for her vast amount of research experience and she believes it will be an advantage as an educator. “My experience is exceedingly broad and it makes it possible for me to teach a variety of subjects, but I also hope provide assistance to students with specific research interests. I also have research ideas that can include student participation, both in the classroom and in mentorships,” says Chelsea Marie Berns.

Following graduation from Iowa State University, Chelsea Marie Berns continues to conduct and publish research in biology and ecology. In the future, she hopes to find a permanent position as an educator. In 2013-2014, Chelsea Marie Berns will serve as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. Chelsea Marie Berns is excited for her new opportunity and is looking forward to continuing her teaching.
