While University of Colorado sophomore Caitlin Lizza was back home for the summer, her dog Mattie celebrated its most recent birthday. It was a joyous occasion for all, as Mattie is a beloved member of Caitlin Lizza’s family who enjoys special privileges at home. The Australian Shepherd has been a part of Caitlin Lizza’s life for many years, as she grew up through grade school and high school, and it was a challenge for her to be away from the dog during her first year at college. “I missed Mattie all the time while I was away at school,” Caitlin Lizza says. “Sometimes I would even call home and ask to hear Mattie’s voice. I know it’s dorky, but I really love my dog.”

Mattie has been around for a long time in the Lizza household, and Caitlin Lizza hopes the Australian Shepherd will be there for a long time to come. Caitlin Lizza celebrated the dog’s birthday by getting her a few presents and singing “Happy Birthday.” “I could tell that Mattie was happy I was there,” she says. “I had been away for a long time at school, and I know that she missed me.”

Caitlin Lizza says Australian Shepherds are her favorite breed of dog, which perhaps comes as no surprise. “I will probably have Australian Shepherds in my own home, for my own kids to play with, when I am older,” she laughs. “I just love Australian Shepherds.”

While at home from school Caitlin Lizza took Mattie on walks all the time, satisfying the dog’s needs and also her own love of the outdoors, all while getting to spend time with the dog she loves. Caitlin Lizza says she is enjoying her time at the University of Colorado, but is also thrilled to be able to come home for the summers and spend time with her family and her favorite pooch.

Caitlin Lizza says that the new school year will find her missing Mattie as usual, but she has an ace up her sleeve. “I took a new picture of Mattie while I was at home, and I’m going to have it framed. That way Mattie will always be with me.”
