Bob Moretti takes a look at the annual 10 mile race for lymphoma research

The 12th annual Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile Run took place on Saturday, May 23rd, on Memorial Day weekend, and the overall winner was 26-year old Dan Kremske of Woodstock, Illinois, who finished with a time of 49 minutes, 19 seconds. In the women's division the winner was 23-year old Lauren Kersjes of Downers Grover, Illinois, who finished in just under one hour flat, with a time of 58 minutes, 58 seconds.

Due to injury during the training process, roofing specialist Bob Moretti was regrettably unable to take part in the race. As he knows, the annual Fleet Feet Run is the world's largest and most successful charity endurance training program in the world. Since it was founded in 1988, the organization has raised more than 1.4 billion dollars to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Had he not been injured, Bob Moretti would have been one of more than six hundred thousand runners who have ran with Team in Training over the years. His participation in the race, he explains, would have been "to support Lymphoma victims and patients; my cousin was diagnosed in 2012." Lymphoma is a form of cancer that attacks the lymphatic system, which is part of the body's natural immunity system.

Lymphoma affects white blood cells, the cells of the immune system. There were nearly eighty thousand new cases of lymphoma reported in the United State during 2014, and thanks to ongoing research into the disease, the survival rates have greatly increased in recent years.

Bob Moretti enjoys running in his spare time and says that it is an excellent way to stay in shape. He also enjoys the sport of it. "I run frequently and have raced in a few 5K and 8K races, and I once completed a half marathon in 2012 in under two hours," he says, adding that the actual time was one hour and fifty-three minutes. The 2015 edition of the Fleet Feet race was an upgraded finish line on the fifty yard line at Soldier Field in Chicago, the home of the Chicago Bears. Other groups taking part in the 2015 race were the Team to End AIDS and Team Salute, which honors the nation's military.

Bob Moretti has worked as an Architectural Specialist for Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance in 2011. "I can help architects solve complex roofing details and scenarios," he says. "Roofs are the fifth elevation of a building and are often overlooked, despite being arguably the most important part of a building." He is also studying for his Master of Business Administration, which he expects to complete in early 2016.
