Alexander Funicello is a physician who specializes in pulmonology, a specialty that diagnoses and manages various lung disorders. He has been in practice for many years, and during that time has been transformed from a mere opponent of smoking to an outspoken critic of the tobacco industry, and a man on a mission to get people to quit smoking.

"I'll admit that I don't have a lot of data to back this up," he says, as he begins sharing his views on cigarettes and nicotine addiction. "But I think it is beyond question that the best, most effective way to quit smoking is to just go cold turkey. It's not easy – giving up any addiction never is. But it's fast and it's free. It's safe and it's definitely effective."

Alexander Funicello says that quitting smoking has become an industry unto itself, not unlike the tobacco industry it is in opposition to. "It's Big Pharma," Alexander Funicello declares. "The big pharmaceutical companies bombard us with the message of how hard it is to quit smoking; how you can't do it alone. How you should buy one product or another to help you get off those things. Now, I will grant you that for some people, it may be easier to chew nicotine gum or wear a nicotine patch. But they aren't doing themselves any favors. They're prolonging their agony. The best and most effective way to quit is just to quit outright."

The quit-smoking products touted by pharmaceutical companies, he says, are usually tested by smokers who joined studies to test the product. "From everything that I have read on this – and it's quite a bit, I assure you – those quit-smoking products have consistently failed against cold turkey quitters in just about every survey that's been conducted." People who quit cold turkey report a transitional period where they don't feel well. This is withdrawal. But once it passes – and it could be as long as several weeks – a high percentage stay off of cigarettes for good.

"Make no mistake – quitting cold turkey is no picnic," Alexander Funicello warns. "But it works. It works best if you have the support of friends and loved ones. Quitting cold turkey is the most effective way, and it's free."
