Newspaper Adopts The Westbury Place and Mobilizes Community Support in an Effort to Bring Holiday Cheer and Donations to Houston Area Seniors

HOUSTON, Texas – Continuing a long legacy of charitable work, this holiday season the Houston Forward Times will adopt The Westbury Place, a local assisted living and nursing care facility. Through December 22, the Forward Times staff is encouraging readers and members of the community to donate socks, blankets and scarfs to the residents. Additionally, on December 23, the Forward Times staff will join the residents for a festive celebration including Christmas carols, dancing, fellowshipping and praying with those who request it.

“This is our way of helping to make the season bright for those residents who may not be able to get home for the holidays or be with their loved ones this Christmas,” said Karen Carter Richards, publisher and chief executive officer. “It’s also a way for us to honor and give back to the seniors in our community, many of whom have been readers of the Houston Forward Times since we first launched over 55 years ago.”

The Houston Forward Times is the largest African American independently owned and operated newspaper in the Southern Region of the U.S. For decades, the publication has covered issues important to seniors and their families including healthcare, aging and civil rights. The Forward Times also regularly features notable seniors who have had a deep impact on the Houston area community.

Donations for the residents of The Westbury Place can be dropped off between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the offices of the Houston Forward Times, located at 4411 Almeda Road. The December 23 celebration will be held at The Westbury Place, located at 5201 S. Willow Drive.
