FORMULATED POLYMER PRODUCTS WILL CEASE TO USE DecaBDE (DecabromodiphenylOxide) FLAME RETARDANT TEXTILE BACK COATINGS FROM 1ST SEPTEMBER 2013

DecaBDE – Bis (pentabromophenyl) ether is a brominated flame retardant which for many years has been used as a highly effective component in textile back coatings designed to meet the requirements of The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations as well as other fire safety standards.

Unfortunately, as the vast majority of manufacturers in the industry are now aware, DecaBDE has been included in the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) published on the 19/12/2012. The substance is considered as a PBT/vPvB according to Article 57 (d) & (e) of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH – Annex XIII), as amended. Although not an outright ban the listing will add complexity and cost for formulators, textile back coaters and end users.

As a consequence Formulated Polymer Products have taken the decision to discontinue the use of DecaBDE in all formulations. Following extensive testing and production trials of revised formulations Formulated Polymer Products will replace DecaBDE with Ethane 1,2 (bispentabromophenyl) or EBP as it is more commonly known.

Over the next two months Formulated Polymers will gradually switch existing formulations to EBP whilst working closely with customers to ensure a smooth transition.
