Irving, TX, – Using radiotherapy sooner rather than later following a prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer can increase survival chances, according to a new study. The study in question points to the benefits of adding in this secondary treatment regardless of a man’s post-surgical prostate-specific antigen levels if risk levels are high enough.

To arrive at those findings, researchers tracked more than 1,000 patients over the course of nearly nine years. The research showed that men who received radiotherapy more immediately after surgery tended to have a better outlook than those who did not. In addition, men who received radiotherapy sooner also saw lower recurrence rates and a lower likelihood that cancer would spread.

“The study turns standard conventions upside down,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “At present, radiotherapy is generally reserved for use as a first-line treatment in some cases or as a ‘salvage’ option if elevated PSA levels indicate surgery may not have completely eradicated cancer cells. The findings point to the possible benefits of using this therapy regardless of PSA levels in higher risk and more aggressive cases.”

It is estimated that 160,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the coming year. Men who are diagnosed with this disease are strongly encouraged to discuss all treatment options with their healthcare providers. If a case is deemed high risk, more aggressive treatments may be recommended. Men should be made aware of all their options and the potential risks and rewards of each treatment so that they may make informed decisions.

“The best treatment recommendations will vary from case to case, based on such factors as cancer stage, aggressiveness and a man’s age, among other considerations,” says Dr. Echt. “With that in mind, it is imperative for men to discuss treatment options and alternatives directly with a healthcare provider with case-specific information.”
