Founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute talks about the benefits of hormone therapy.

Irving, TX, – Hormone therapy has long played a role in the treatment of prostate cancer. Known to provide life-extending benefits in cases where other treatments fail to eradicate the disease, this form of therapy may soon play a different role for men who face this diagnosis. Researchers have found that including hormone therapy along with other forms of treatment may help safeguard men by lowering their risk of recurrence.

“A recent study showed very promising protective results for men who received hormone therapy as part of a three-step treatment plan following prostate cancer diagnosis,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “Men who received a limited course of hormones were much less likely to witness recurrence. They were also less likely to experience spread of their cancer.”

The study in question involved more than 750 patients who had all undergone radical prostatectomies as the first part of their treatment plans. The men also underwent radiotherapy to help ensure that cancer cells had been eradicated. Following those first two steps, the men were split into groups. Some men received hormone therapy while others were given a placebo. Researchers ultimately found that men who received hormones following surgery and radiation had lower risks for recurrence and spread than those who were given placebos.

“The results show that hormone therapy may play more than a salvage role in the treatment of prostate cancer,” says Dr. Echt. “This form of treatment is meant to slow the progression of prostate cancer by cutting harmful cells off from their fuel source. In doing so as part of a three-step treatment plan, hormone therapy may also play a role in helping men lower their recurrence risks.”

Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer are urged to talk to their doctors about all treatment options. Hormone therapy may be recommended in some cases to help slow this disease’s progression. The treatment in and of itself, however, is not intended to be a “cure.”
