Follow-Through a Must with Active Surveillance

Founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute discusses this treatment option.

Irving, TX – Thousands of American men diagnosed with prostate cancer this year will be told they’re candidates for a treatment known as “active surveillance.” This alternative to standard treatment in certain low-risk cases can help men avoid all the potential side effects that go along with more aggressive measures, but it shouldn’t be entered into lightly. When it is recommended, follow-through is critical for both the patient and the physician.

“Studies are beginning to show that not everyone is following through with the active surveillancepart of this treatment option as well as they should,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “This can be a devastating mistake if the cancer in question happens to progress, turns out to be more aggressive than initially thought or spreads.”

Active surveillance is recommended when cancer is considered low risk and remains localized. This alternative calls for routine checkups to ensure that a tumor is not changing in character. It is suggested as an option because low-risk forms of prostate cancer are known to be slow-growing. That means some men may be much more likely to live long lives before the cancer becomes a serious mortality risk.

“Surveillance is critical even in low risk cases to ensure that intervention occurs as soon as possible if the tumor does pose a threat down the road,” says Dr. Echt. “Studies are showing, however, that only about one in three men are receiving the follow-up care they need.”

Men who are offered active surveillance as a treatment option should report in for prostate-specific antigen tests about once every six months. Repeat biopsies are also recommended every two years to ensure any changes are noted as quickly as possible.

“Active surveillance can be a highly effective way for men to avoid side effect risks associated with prostate cancer treatment,” says Dr. Echt. “To get the most out of this alternative while safeguarding life, men must follow through to ensure proper surveillance.”
