Aggressiveness Test May Help Determine Metastasis Risks

Prostate cancer is commonly known as a slow-growing cancer. Due to that, many men will find they are more likely to face mortality to a cause other than cancer. That is why active surveillance instead of intervention is recommended in some cases.

Irving, TX, – Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer may soon find their doctors recommending an additional test after biopsy samples are taken. The test can help doctors better gauge which patients are more likely to face aggressive tumor growth and metastasis down the road.

“The Prolaris test is able to more clearly gauge the potential aggressiveness of biopsy samples because it is designed to measure how slowly or rapidly cancer cells are dividing,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “In doing so, the screening can provide valuable insights that can guide doctors and their patients in making very case-specific treatment decisions.”

Prostate cancer is commonly known as a slow-growing cancer. Due to that, many men will find they are more likely to face mortality to a cause other than cancer. That is why active surveillance instead of intervention is recommended in some cases. Some prostate cancer tumors, however, pose much greater risks. Being able to more readily distinguish slow-growing cancers from more aggressive ones is what makes Prolaris so important.

Prolaris has been an available option for a while. Its continued success in patient use and trials, however, recently prompted Medicaid to expand its coverage for this test. A recent study involving men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer found the test was very useful in accurately predicting aggressiveness and the likelihood for cancer to metastasize.

“By providing greater insight into the nature of a tumor, this test can help guide highly tailored treatments,” explains Dr. Echt. “In doing so, it can enable men and their doctors to make decisions that are more likely to lead to the best possible outcome.”

Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer are strongly urged to talk to their doctors about all treatment options. If tumor aggressiveness is a concern, Prolaris may be recommended for use on samples taken during routine biopsies.
