Dr. Echt explains the various facts about prostate exams.

Irving, Texas, June 18, 2019 – The prostate assists in producing seminal fluids. Prostate exams help doctors to diagnose inflamed or enlarged prostates. They can also diagnose prostate cancer. The two prostate exams include tests for prostate-specific antigens (PSA) levels and digital rectal exams (DRE). Doctors recommend prostate exams if the patient shows symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Exams can also be conducted as part of routine checkups.

“Men should begin their prostate cancer screening at the age of 50,” said Dr. Echt. "Those at high risks should begin screen as early as 45 years. Prostate cancer is treatable when it is still localized. A lot of factors, including age, will determine the type of treatment a patient will receive. It is recommended to discuss risk factors with the doctor to determine if you need a prostate exam."

• Digital rectal exam–It is a simple and quick procedure that helps doctors to check prostate health. The patient bends at the waist while standing, or lies on the side with knees bent towards their chest. The doctor will place a finger inside the patient's rectum and press one hand on the pelvic area and the other on the prostate to determine the shape and size of the prostate. An enlarged or inflamed prostate will cause the patient significant discomfort.

• Prostate-specific antigen exam – During this procedure, the doctor will test the patient’s blood for PSA (protein that liquefies semen) levels in order to screen for prostate cancer. An enlarged, infected or inflamed prostate or some forms of prostate cancer can elevate PSA levels.

• Patients with anal tears, hemorrhoids, or other anal problems should inform the doctor. The doctor should also know if the patient is on any medications or supplements. After the PSA exam, the blood will be sent to the lab for analysis.

“The results of a prostate exam will determine if the patient will require more diagnostic tests such as biopsies, transrectal ultrasounds and more,” continued Dr. Echt. This will give doctors a clear picture of the patient’s prostate cancer situation and take the next necessary treatment steps.”
