Can PET Scans Provide a Reliable Alzheimer’s Diagnosis?

At present, one of the best ways to definitively determine if Alzheimer’s is present is to look for the telltale amyloid plaque on the brain.

The founder of PET/CT at Las Colinas discusses the possible benefits of this procedure.

Irving, TX – It is estimated that about 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. This progressive condition slowly damages the brain, gradually stripping a person of their memories, personalities and even their ability to communicate. While early diagnosis can lead to the use of medications meant to slow the disease’s progression, diagnosis remains troublesome at best.

At present, one of the best ways to definitively determine if Alzheimer’s is present is to look for the telltale amyloid plaque on the brain. At present, however, there is no way to do so effectively prior to a person’s death, which is why other less definitive tools are used for diagnosis currently. Researchers believe they have found a tracer agent that can be used in conjunction with standard positron emission tomography testing, or PET scans, to detect amyloid definitively prior to morbidity.

“This possibility is incredibly exciting for anyone who has watched a loved one struggle with this disease,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “Having the ability to confirm or deny the likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease versus another form of dementia, for example, could lead to the use of proper medications faster. This, in turn, could help some patients enjoy longer periods of time in the earlier phases of the disease.”

Amyloid PET scans have stood up well to testing so far. A new large-scale study is currently underway to gauge the accuracy and effectiveness this test may have to offer. In the meantime, people who suspect they or a loved one has Alzheimer’s should seek medical advice. Early intervention in this disease will not provide a cure, but the right medications can buy patients valuable time.

“Researchers continue to work feverishly to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease,” says Dr. Echt. “The solution, however, remains elusive. In the meantime, treatments have been developed that can slow this disease’s progression. Actively seeking a diagnosis when dementia is suspected is critical for ensuring access to this type of medication when it can be the most beneficial.”
