Android 7.1 wurde im Zusammenhang mit der Vorstellung des Google Pixel und Pixel XL (hier gehts zu unserem Test) enthüllt und ist auf den Smartphones, die ab heute in Verbraucherhände gelangen, vorinstalliert. Bei der Entwicklung des ersten großen Updates für die aktuelle Android-Hauptversion 7.0 Nougat hat Google also offenkundig zuerst den Fokus auf Optimierungen für seine beiden neuen Flaggschiff-Geräte gelegt. Mit dem heutigen Tag können sich nun aber immerhin Besitzer des Nexus 6P, 5X und Pixel C einen ersten Eindruck von der Software-Aktualisierung machen. Die für November eingeplante Developer Preview 2 wird dann laut Google zusätzliche Geräte unterstützen. Es ist aber bislang nicht bekannt welche genau. Was jedoch feststeht, ist, dass letztendlich alle Nexus- und Pixel-Geräte, die Android 7.0 bekommen haben, auch Android 7.1 bekommen werden.
Im Hinblick auf die Verbesserungen von Android 7.1 ist zu erwähnen, dass es sich speziell für die Nexus-Familie um ein Update mit Optimierungen, aber kaum neuen Funktionen handelt, da Google einige Features nur exklusiv für Pixel-Phones anbietet. Zu diesen gehören beispielsweise der neue Pixel Launcher und die Pixel Kamera-App. Immerhin hat Google vor kurzem die nette Wallpaper-(Hintergrundbild)-App, die auf den Flaggschiffen mitgeliefert wird, in den Play Store gestellt. Somit kann sie auf allen Android-Smartphones genutzt werden.

Ergänzend zur Android 7.1 Developer Preview 1 wurden laut Google auch neue Programmierschnittstellen (API Level 25) für die Entwicklergemeinde fertigstellt. Entwickler können also ab sofort Apps, die diese APIs nutzen, zur Aufnahme in den Play Store einreichen.
Für alle, die bislang noch keine Android-Beta auf einem Nexus-Gerät installiert haben, abschließend noch eine kurze Erklärung wie dieser Prozess funktioniert: Die Android 7.1 Developer Preview 1 lässt sich wie schon die Android N Betas zuvor von jedermann mit einem unterstützten Smartphone oder Tablet nutzen. Dazu ist lediglich die Anmeldung auf dieser Webseite (Android Beta Programm) nötig, und zwar mit demselben Google-Konto, das auch auf dem Nexus-Gerät verwendet wird. Anschließend sollte nach einer kurzen Wartezeit automatisch eine Meldung auf dem Smartphone/Tablet erscheinen, die zum Download der neuesten Android-Beta auffordert. Alternativ haben erfahrene Android-Anwender natürlich wie gewohnt auch die Möglichkeit, ein Image der Android 7.1 Developer Preview 1 herunterzuladen und manuell auf ihr Gerät aufzuspielen.

Die Abmessungen des Kamera-Smartphones betragen 147,8 x 73,35 x 9,69 Millimeter (14,02 mm bei der Kameralinse), es unterstützt LTE Cat 4 und WLAN nach 802.11ac, bietet einen Lautsprecher sowie ein integriertes Dual-Mikrofon und besitzt einem 3000 mAh Akku. Als Betriebssystem kommt ab Werk noch Android 6.0 Marshmallow aus dem Vorjahr auf dem Ektra zu Einsatz.
Abschließend sind noch ein paar Besonderheiten zu Kodaks Neuvorstellung zu nennen. So verfügtdas Smartphone etwa über eine separate Auslöser-Taste mit den charakteristischen zwei Druckpunkten im Stile traditioneller Kameras und wird mit einem recht umfassenden Software-Paket geliefert. Der Hersteller installiert beispielsweise eine Apps zur Bildbearbeitung und zum Druck hoch-qualitativer Fotoabzüge vor.
Kodak will das neue Ektra Ende des Jahres in Deutschland auf den Markt bringen. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung wird bei 499 Euro liegen. Glücklicherweise verspricht das Unternehmen regelmäßige Software-Updates, für die sich Käufer schon mal unter kodakphones.com registrieren können.
