We are surrounded by tales that can cause terror in the hearts of children and give adults nightmare. Let’s have a look at some of these nightmares-inducing creatures. Not for the faint-hearted.

- Demons
This supernatural and often monovalent being from folklore has been the subject of nightmares for centuries now. However, in Ancient Near Eastern religions as well as in the Abrahamic traditions, including ancient and medieval Christian demonology, a demon is considered a harmful spiritual entity, below the heavenly planes. Demons are still feared largely due to their alleged power to possess living creatures.

- Ghosts
According to folklore, ghost is the spirit of a dead person or animal that can appear to the living. But literature has given shapes to these ghosts—not all of them are scary beings. The ghosts in Harry Potter seem better than angels. Despite centuries of investigation, there is no scientific evidence that any location is inhabited by spirits of the dead.

- Night hag
Another creature from folklore, a night hag is used to explain the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. It is a phenomenon during which a person feels a presence of a supernatural malevolent being which immobilizes the person as if sitting on his/her chest or the foot of his/her bed.

- Spring-Heeled Jack
This is a Victorian legend many people truly believe has layers of truth within. The tales depict Spring Heeled Jack was a peculiar man who prowled the streets of London and preyed up young beautiful women. The paranormal kicks in because eyewitnesses report if anyone actually caught him, blue flames would cascade from his mouth similar to that of a dragon.

- Loch Ness Monster
Originating from Scottish folklore, the Loch Ness Monster or Nessie, is an aquatic being which reputedly inhabits Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, and is often described as being large in size, with a long neck and one or more humps protruding from the water.

- Vampire
This mythological being subsists by feeding on blood of the living. In European folklore, vampires were undead beings that visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighborhoods they inhabited when they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance, markedly different from today's gaunt, pale vampire which dates from the early 19th century.

- Cookie cutter shark
This nasty little bioluminescent shark, with its neatly arranged serrated teeth, inhabits the oceanic “twilight zone” in depths of up to 1,000 meters. It preys on big fishes, whales, dolphins and the occasional unfortunate swimmer, latching onto them before gouging out cookie-sized chunks of flesh.
