Clara Schumann’s Three Romances are nicely adaptable to wind instruments, and especially lovely on alto flute or flute, as Noteworthy Sheet Music’s new transcriptions reveal. The pieces are melodic and expressive, epitomizing the Romantic era.

Noteworthy Sheet Music, LLC (NSM) is an online sheet music publisher with a catalog of ~175 editions. NSM specializes in sheet music for flute and alto flute. They offer original works by distinguished contemporary composers, re-notated versions or facsimiles of rare historical scores, and unique transcriptions of pieces from the classical repertoire. Clara Schumann began her musical training at age five, under the tutelage of her father, Friedrich Wieck. She grew from a child prodigy to become one of the most renowned concert pianists of her time, and an expert interpreter of the works of Robert Schumann, whom she married at age 18, and later those of their dear young friend Johannes Brahms. Clara Schumann was also a talented composer who, despite the demands of raising a large family and pursuing her career as a concert pianist, editor and teacher, managed to compose a significant body of outstanding work. Her "Drei Romanzen für Pianoforte und Violine", Op. 22, were written in 1853 and dedicated to the Schumanns’ great friend, the famous Hungarian violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, with whom Clara performed the "Three Romances" when they concertized together on tours across Europe. The "Romances" are lovely, short pieces, melodic and expressive; they epitomize the Romantic era and represent true chamber music in the sense that both instruments are featured comparably, rather than the piano having a merely accompaniment role.

The "Three Romances" are nicely adaptable to wind instruments, and are particularly lovely when played on alto flute. The NSM transcription required few modifications to bring the original violin part completely in range for alto flute and provide flute-friendly, musically-appropriate alternatives to the occasional violin double-stop. Since some flutists may wish to mix and match the three movements, playing one or two of the Romances on alto flute and the third on concert flute, or vice versa, the publishers have included in the same edition a complete alternative part adapted for C-flute. The edition does not provide a re-notated copy of the score, but high-quality PDFs of the piano and violin score are freely available in the public domain, and are easy to use along with the NSM flute parts. Additional information about this new publication, including a preview page of the alto flute part, can be found on the NSM website at https://www.noteworthysheetmusic.com/score-descriptions/5-transcriptions-alto-flute/692-schumann-clara-three-romances-alto-flute-or-flute-and-piano.
