If you are given the opportunity to sign up to private health insurance, it can be difficult to understand what the difference is between this and the NHS, and whether it is worthwhile. Although the fundamental reasons for both are to provide health care to patients, there are differences which exist in what both of these can offer.

Cost

Healthcare is free in the NHS, whereas private health insurance comes with a price tag. The cost of private health insurance will differ depending on what kind of treatment is required. You will usually be given the option to sign up for private healthcare at your work, or they may even provide this as part of your package. There are many people who don’t realise this, so it is worthwhile checking your contract to find out if this is an option.

Waiting Times

The most significant reason for people signing up to private health insurance is the reduction in waiting times. There are huge numbers of people using the NHS at any given time, which means the waiting times can be very high.

It can take as long as several months to get treatment on the NHS. Private health insurance will reduce waiting times, which can be a huge benefit if you have an illness which needs treatment quickly.

Environment

There is a significant difference between the environment of the NHS and private healthcare. As private healthcare comes at a cost, you can expect a much more spacious and generally nicer environment than what you get from the NHS.

There are often en suite rooms in private healthcare and it is an environment which provides a lot more comfort. The NHS is used by so many people and is a free resource, which means the rooms are usually much more cramped and a lot less comfortable than that of what you would experience by paying private health insurance.

Treatment and Technology
As private healthcare is paid for and often at quite a significant cost, you can expect to receive the very best of treatments and the most advanced technology. Private health insurance will give you access to the very best of technology, which means it is easier to treat illnesses.

The NHS simply does not have the funds to continuously update technology, which means that although there are treatments available, they are not as advanced as that of private healthcare.
