The Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery’s founder talks about a new breakthrough.

Plano, TX, 2016 – With an estimated third of the American population considered obese, researchers are working hard to find options to help people safely and effectively shed pounds. While weight loss surgery can assist many with a long-term solution, the option isn’t open to those who are not considered severely obese in many cases. A relatively new breakthrough may soon provide the help people who struggle with weight need to shed pounds and keep them off. What’s making this option so especially attractive is that it is simple, largely non-invasive and is showing tremendous results.

“One of the latest possibilities under study for helping obese people lose weight safely involves nothing more than a relatively simple injection process,” explains Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas-based Nicholson Clinic, one of the top weight loss surgery centers in the country. “The procedure is one, in fact, that is already approved for use to treat an entirely different condition. Through its approved use, doctors inadvertently discovered strong weight loss benefits.”

The procedure in question is known as the bariatric arterial embolization, or BAE for short. It is FDA-approved for treating excess bleeding in the stomach. It involves the injection of microbeads into one of the main arteries that supplies the stomach. After using this in emergency situations, clinicians began to notice weight loss benefits in some patients. That has sparked a number of small-scale studies to further explore the possible use of this process for helping people shed pounds. Initial studies have shown that patients treated with this procedure can lose about 6 percent of their excess weight in the first month. A 13 percent average loss was noted six months out.

“While further study is required before approval will be granted for more extensive use, BAE is an exciting breakthrough,” Dr. Nicholson said. “By potentially offering those who are bordering on serious obesity a way to address weight concerns, the procedure and others like it may provide hope for those who struggle to shed pounds do so without the need for surgical interventions.”
