At the Goldberg centre for vision correction lasek is Dr Goldberg's procedure of choice. With over 20 years experience in performing laser vision correction, including Lasik surgery and PRK, he now only performs Lasek. We get asked why he no longer will perform Lasik and we actually LOVE getting this question because it allows us to go over Lasek vs. Lasik
Hundreds of thousands of patients yearly choose to have the life altering procedure of eye surgery.
Currently it is the most popular elective surgery globally with numbers continuously increasing as technology continues to advance. When considering to have laser eye surgery, most will be confronted with the choice of whether to have Lasek or Lasik eye surgery (Lasek is a more gentle form of PRK).
Both Lasek and Lasik surgery are types of laser eye surgery accounting for about 99% of all procedures currently being performed. The main difference between Lasek vs. Lasik lies in the part of the cornea being performed on. The cornea is the part of the eye that is to be treated in order to correct a prescription.
During Lasik surgery, a flap is cut into the integrity of the cornea which effectively means a layer of your cornea is cut and lifted to the side. The laser which corrects the refractive error, reshapes the cornea and the flap is replaced back.
During the Lasek procedure however there is no flap created, there is no cut to the eye. Dr. Goldberg simply loosens the very outer layer of your cornea (epithelium) and moves it to the side. The laser is then applied (the same as it is for Lasik) and the epithelium is then smoothed back over and left to heal. Contact lenses, used as bandages, are then placed on the eye for four days. These are both put on and taken off by Dr. Goldberg, patient's do not have to worry about removing the contacts.
Essentially, the reason Lasek is Dr. Goldberg's procedure of choice comes down to the level of safety he wants to pass on to his patients. There are more risks associated with Lasik than Lasek as the vast majority of complications are associated with the creation and healing of the flap. There is of course no flap created during Lasek.
