Let us begin by recalling the two possible types of hypertrophy, myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic, of which I spoke a few years ago (how time flies!).

 
Hypertrophy types
Training volume is the total number of repetitions performed (volume = number of batches x repetitions per batch). But the distribution of that volume and intensity employed relevant.
The starting point is to understand how we can alter the type of muscle growth.

The first generates more dense and angular muscles with less volume. The second tends towards larger muscles, with a bit more 'puffy' appearance.
