It's unclear what was behind the issue, although people took to social media in their droves to complain about the outage.

Microsoft stated in a short assertion: "Some prospects may have skilled difficulty signing in to some services.

"The problem has been resolved."

A spokeswoman was unable to provide any additional details when asked about the scale of the outage.

Hotmail, which has been rebranded underneath Microsoft's Outlook banner, is believed to have crashed before noon GMT.

Microsoft's Twitter accounts had been flooded with users desperate for info - with some saying their common business operations have been being broken by the glitch.

The company responded to at least one user in Eire: "Sorry for the inconvenience. We know in regards to the issue and are at the moment engaged on the resolution. Request you try to log in again after a number of hours."

Another consumer wrote on a Microsoft group web site: "I've had repeated points within the final 15 minutes logging into Hotmail -first it mentioned my account would not exist after which it says that my account can't be located, after which lastly it asks for my password however the web page does not look legit."

It comes months after Microsoft disclosed details of cyber attacks by a hacking group that exploited a security flaw in its Home windows operating system.

The disclosure in November revealed that a group beforehand linked to the Russian government and US political hacks was behind the attacks.

It stated at the time that it was issuing a brand new "patch" to guard Windows towards the newly found threat.
