US Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said that exceedingly high levels of lead were present in jewellery-making kits for children. The kits were manufactured by LaRose Industries and sold by major retailers in the United States including Target, K-Mart, Walmart, and Toys-R-Us in the State of New York particularly in New York City, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Long Island as well as on Amazon.com, an online shopping portal. Several Cra-Z-Art products contained lead levels almost 10 times higher than the 100 ppm limit approved by federal authorities for children’s products; the lead levels were at 120 to 980 ppm.

In another study conducted by the US Department of Ecology in October 2015, some of the dresses for girls adorned with jewellery showed dangerously high levels of lead and cadmium. For example, a necklace packaged with the dress had 50,100 ppm of lead (i.e., the product is 5% lead) while another contained 984,000 ppm cadmium (i.e., the item was 98% cadmium).

The concern over lead and cadmium levels in children’s items is warranted considering their serious side effects. Lead adversely affects brain development as well as damages the immune, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. Cadmium significantly increases the risks for damage to the cardiovascular, skeletal, and excretory systems. Both are also toxic even at very low doses such that the combination of high levels and prolonged exposure can be fatal.
