Metro Safety ensures the Richmond community is trained in basic first aid for safety issues that arise in confined spaces

Richmond, BC: The Canadian community based in Richmond has been benefiting from Metro Safety Training’s safety concerns and first aid training for the past 10 years.

This first aid training center has been taking proactive measures to counter safety threats in confined spaces by educating and training individuals with basic first aid lessons. They have been striving to curb medical complications that have developed in high-risk situations and unventilated locations by offering professional training courses in various areas in British Columbia.

A report on work fatality and injury rates published in 2018 revealed that there was 2.27% per 100 injury rate, 9% occupational disease fatality rate, and 51,044 time-delay injuries in British Columbia during 2016. These statistics paint a bleak picture of the safety and healthcare conditions at workplaces and confined spaces in the country. Taking these numbers as motivation to fuel more efforts, Metro Safety Training has risen to the challenge of bringing these rates down to a minimum.

Their confined space standby person training is advised to workers who are employed in construction projects or heavy industrial businesses as safety co-ordinators and emergency response managers. This includes the likes of welders, ship builders, inspectors, site medics, con-space rescue techs, pipe fitters and boiler makers. Since Worksafe Regulations mandate a standby person to monitor a worker in a confined-space project, Metro Safety trains the monitoring personnel to deal with emergencies.

A spokesperson from the company said, “It saddens us to pick up the newspaper and read about pipe fitters and welders dying in the line of duty due to confined spaces. As unfortunate as it is to work in these businesses, they’re a major part of the service industry. No one should be put in such high-risk situations where their life is at stake! The only way to ensure their safety at work is to train individuals with ways to deal with emergencies should there be any. We consider it our duty to ensure that our students understand hazard ratings as safety monitors. From keeping track of chemical gases that behave differently in such atmospheric conditions to mitigating risk of ventilation, our students pass out with a full understanding and hands-on experience of saving lives!”

Apart from confined space training, they offer multiple other first aid training and workplace safety courses. The latter is a comprehensive set of customized courses catering to forklift operation, fall protection, asbestos/silica awareness and BCCSA traffic control person training.

Metro Safety Training is an accredited business that has been favorably reviewed by alumni trainees. With affordable charges per class, theirs is more than a commercial business; it’s a service to society.
