Physiotherapy incorporates rehabilitative medical practices focused on assisting patients improve, recover or maintain their physical abilities. It involves the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, disabilities and disorders using physical means. The practitioners in this field are known as physiotherapists. This therapy works to restore the normal body functions and conditions, as it is a holistic practice that works on the whole body. It also works on injuries and illnesses. The patients are usually involved directly in their care. This physical care can be found in many places including private hospitals, community based organizations, workplaces, sports clubs, clinics and charities among other places. Since the 19th century, it has been practised although things like massage and manipulation were not included. During that time, it majorly referred to treatment using drugs and surgery. Physiotherapists used water-based applications, electrical stimulation and heat to help in body movement and functioning.

Physiotherapy has a lot of benefits to its patients. It addresses many physical related problems including cardiopulmonary, cardiac, neurological and orthopedic among infants, children and adults even the old. The orthopedic problems treated include back & neck pain, joint disorders, sports injuries, amputation, bone fractures, arthritis and post-operative conditions. Patients are always subjected to therapeutic exercise to enhance strength, initiate motion and endurance, and initiate joint movement to minimize stiffness and modalities. All these are done to relieve pain. Patients are also trained to make use of ambulation devices to help in movement restoration and improvement.

Patients with back pain have highly been advised to consider physiotherapy as it is an effective and conservative option. Research has proven its high efficiency in pain reduction, muscle strengthening, mobility enhancement, posture improvement through exercising the spinal muscles and majorly elimination of low back pain. Having this therapy on a regular basis helps in reducing mechanical stress to spinal structures and enhances the general individual physical fitness level. With it patients can avoid recurrence of back pain.

Physiotherapy is essential for everyone especially women. This is because women are susceptible to many physical disorders. Fortunately, most of these conditions respond well to this therapy. Women usually trust what has been proven to work like physical therapy. Their health entails a broad spectrum of problems that physical therapy can effectively solve. For example, the back pain during pregnancy and older women incontinence can be handled by this therapy. Although statistics put millions as patients of bladder incontinence, women are more affected than men. However, both men and women should be on high alert of the many types of incontinence such as stress and urge incontinences. Stress incontinence happens during coughs and sneezes while urge continence is when a person experience sudden urges to use the restroom. Most of the time, urge incontinence is as a result of tilted uterus in women and also sexual dysfunctions in both men and women.

Treatment of neurological disorders can be achieved through physiotherapy. Some of the disorders are Parkinson’s disease, strokes, sclerosis, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury. It is important for children patients of cerebral palsy as it reduces deformity and spasticity. It also enhances postural control, trains the child to use supplement devices to maximize the functional independence of the child. This therapy also has good response with cardiopulmonary conditions. It is useful to patients with difficulties in performing their day to day activities, breath shortness and reduced endurance. The patients are helped through exercise and endurance training.
