The skin serves so many functions, it is important that we take proper care of it so it can continue carrying out those functions effectively.

 
Skin is the largest organ of the human body. Skin serves as a protective barrier that protects the underlying bones, internal organs, ligaments and muscles, acting as a filter and helping regulate body temperature. Skin is constantly growing, as old cells die and new cells are formed. All aspects of life affect skin, from the things that people eat to where they live. That is why we cannot overstate how important proper skin care is. Skin is taken very much for granted and too little time is spent thinking about the functions and importance of skin. Therefore, it is our responsibility to maintain our skin’s health, in order to maintain inner health and well-being, and to continue looking youthful.
Appearance
If you are concerned about your physical appearance and want to look youthful, then it is vital that you take good and proper care of your skin. Skin tends to appear dull and sallow when it is unhealthy, whereas skin appears full and vibrant when it is healthy. Dehydrates and unhealthy skin tends to sink deeper and makes it easier for wrinkles to develop, as a result of which mottled colored uneven patches can form over the skin. Unhealthy skin tends to appear thins and begins sagging because it becomes less elastic.
Health
Proper skin care is not merely about having a good appearance; it is also about your health as well. Acne, rashes, sores and wrinkles are some unhealthy skin problems that can develop as a result of poor skin care habits. Skin that is unhealthy is more prone to disease infection and is more likely to get scared after an injury. For people who have skin allergies, or suffer from skin problems, such as psoriasis, proper skin care is even more important.
Keeping Skin Healthy
When it comes to caring for skin, remaining vigilant is important since skin is in a constant state of change and growth. Plenty of water should be consumed throughout the day so that skin remains hydrated, and a balanced diet should be maintained so that the minerals and vitamins needed by the skin are provided to it. For best skin care results, diet should essentially include fresh fruits, lean protein, vegetables and whole grains. Whenever spending time outside, sunblock should be used.
Proper Skin Care
Cleansing the skin is an important part of proper skin care. Moisture is needed by the skin for survival, so the use of hot water when washing the face should be avoided, as moisture from the skin is sucked out by the heat. Instead, cool or warm water should be used. Chemical-heavy or harsh soaps should also be avoided, since moisture from the skin is stripped out and it is polluted. Right after bathing, lotion should be applied to the skin to keep it moisturized. For people with a problem with dry skin, an oil-based lotion should be used on the problem area couple of times a day.
Skin Care & Pregnancy
For appearance and health during a pregnancy, it is important to take proper care of the skin. For pregnant women, unhealthy skin can affect the health of the body, and in turn affect the health of the baby as well. When skin is healthy, it is more pliable and the stretch marks are minimized.
