The band saw is called such because the "blade" is truly a band that is held in place by pulleys and moves around in a circular motion. It is a fantastic cutting machine that allows one to cut curves and rounded shapes.

The band saw isn't only for wood. It may used to cut on glass, metals and other substances. The thing you have to know is what type of band (blade) to use. Since we are speaking about woodworking shop tools, a standard tooth blade is the most common for cutting wood. You will find others including the skip tooth blade which is used for cutting on softer woods and the hooked tooth blade for cutting harder pieces of wood. The blades also come in different sizes, real thin and flexible for the cuts that are rounded and curved, thicker broader blades for the straight cuts.

-Always do your maintenance and reviews that you just read in your guide that is produces.

-Make sure that the tool is unplugged before starting any of your maintenance.

-Tighten the blade according to your own owner's manual.

-When plugging the band saw in, always check to make sure it's in the "off" position.

There's a blade guard which you should fix no higher than about 1/4 inch above the wood surface. When you turn on the saw, allow it to get to full speed before you start your cutting. Be sure the wood remains firmly on the surface as you start to cut. Use a push stick for cuts that are extremely thin that you just may keep your fingers at least 3-4 inches away for the blade. There will be times while cutting curves so take it slow and simple that you will place tension. If you do have to back from the cut to relieve the tension, turn off the saw and wait until it totally ceases, then back out your wood.
