There may be a lot of takers for Chinese cuisine but gastronomes often forget that part of the authentic Chinese cuisine experience is to follow their dining etiquettes. Here are some of the do’s and don’ts.

China’s age-old bond with etiquettes and traditions is deeply reflected in their cultural history, and Chinese cuisine is no different. The Chinese community pays close attention to the table manners of their family and peers; making a mistake in this regard is considered a huge faux pas in their culture. The good people of New York need no introduction to a traditional Chinese food menu. However, many of us here have a lot to learn or ‘unlearn’ as far as Chinese table etiquettes are concerned.
Chinese table etiquettes- What you should do
•When you dine at a Chinese restaurant, it is considered good manners to tuck the napkin corner under the plate. The rest of the napkin hangs over your lap as opposed to the whole napkin sitting on your lap.
•It is considered a show of respect to your companions at the table when you place your chopsticks parallel on your plate before taking a break for any reason.
•The Chinese do not consider it an ill-manner when you bring your food bowl close to your mouth or spit any bones directly onto the plate or bowl.
•If you plan to use your chopsticks to serve food onto your plate, then turn the chopsticks, so you do not soil the platter.
Chinese table etiquettes- What you should not do
•The Chinese frown upon those who toy around with their chopsticks. It is common for children to do so; however, adults must refrain from the same as it is bound to draw a few glares in authentic Chinese dining set up.
• The chopsticks also should not be used to point at food or anyone.
• Speaking with food in your mouth is also another huge faux pas in the Chinese culture; guests are expected to relish the flavors and not talk through their bites.
• Blowing on food to cool it down is normal for most of us; however, it is strictly disapproved in the Chinese culture.
So, before you search ‘Authentic Chinese food close to me’ on your phone and head out for an authentic Chinese meal, it may benefit you to study up on these etiquettes.
