Best co-solvent mixture to remove oil and water from metal machine parts.

Drop-in Solvent azeotropes are a perfect alternative for n-Propyl Bromide for dangerous vapor degreasing, electronics, and medical devices. It is a cleaner for oxygen service lines and components that leaves practically no residue.

In substituting traditionally used solvents for external wipe cleaning applications with newer and more environmentally friendly solvent systems, the account has to be taken off their unpredictability since this has a great bearing on the cost of the cleaning process as well as on occupational health hazards to operatives.

The Ideas was to recover a co-solvent mixture that is used to remove oil and water from metal machine parts. The goals of the project are to completely remove the oleic acid, reduce the water molar composition to below 2.5%, maximize co-solvent recovery, and maximize profitability.

Occupational exposure to N-Propyl Bromide usually occurs through breathing or skin contact; it is easily absorbed into the blood via the skin. Extended occupational exposure in higher concentrations than recommended has resulted in significant injury to workers all over the world. Reported symptoms of overexposure affect the nervous system and include confusion, slurred speech, lightheadedness, unusual fatigue and headaches, development of arthralgia, visual disturbances (difficulty focusing), and muscle twitching. Symptoms may persist over one year.

Other signs include irritation of mucous membranes, eyes, upper respiratory tract, and skin, as well as temporary loss of consciousness.

A major challenge of the project is the non-ideal behavior of the components, which includes the lower boiling points of these blends, which may lead to greater solvent loss during use. There are at least 50azeotropes available which have HSP values similar to those of N-Propyl Bromide. These mixtures can be distilled and reused through numerous cycles before it needs to be replaced. These mixtures are usually compatible with all metals and many plastics and other materials typically cleaned in vapor degreasers, ultrasonic tanks or manually.

Replacing itwith azeotropes is the preferred NIOSH option for controlling occupational exposure. NASA has also tested rigorously on this matter and based on their laboratory study, solvent blends of trans-1,2 dichloroethylene with HFEs, HFCs, or PFCs appear to be viable alternatives for vapor degreasing.
