Classical comedies were and have been the greatest source of entertainment for watchers and readers. We all love a good laugh. After all, laughing is the best form of therapy. It is a well-known belief that modern comedies just don’t compare to the classic comedies. Maybe this is actually a fact. Let’s take the example of classic comedy movies. These movies are mostly silent, where you, obviously, can’t hear what the characters are saying and have to use your imagination. This makes it greatly entertaining for watchers; you build your own dialogues based on the actions of the characters. Modern comedy movies, on the other hand, spoon feed the dialogues to you, and you may or may not find those dialogues funny. From this perspective, classic comedies are better than modern ones. Wantate is focused on bringing the audience with a collection of greatest classical comedies of all times.

In Greek comedy—which is as far as the origin of the term can be traced—two groups or societies perform against each other in an amusing theatrical conflict. The plays, referred to as a "Society of Youth" and a "Society of the Old", depict a powerless youth struggling against powerful societal conventions, where the youth is left with little choice but to take recourse a ruse portraying dramatic irony, which provokes laughter. After that evolved satire comedy, where the object of ridicule—generally corrupt individuals, government, etc.—is the focus of humor. Other types of comedies include parody, where a certain target is mocked by means of humorous or ironic imitation; black comedy, which derives humor from the darker aspects of human nature; screwball comedy, where the focus of humor is bizarre characters or events; tragicomedy, which consists of both comedy and tragedy at the same time, a classic example of this type of comedy is Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett; romantic comedy, where the central focus of the drama is romance with humor in the form of dialogue or action of characters, most of the Shakespearean literature is based on romantic comedy; and stand-up comedy—which is believed to be introduced in the 20th century, but this branch of comedy has its origin in classic Parrhesia in 400 BC—wherein the comedian entertains the audience by speaking directly to them.

As time progressed, ‘comedy’ became more and more associated with any sort of performance intended to cause laughter. Then, during the Middle Ages, the term "comedy" became synonymous with satire, and later with humor in general.
