Interior designing is more than putting elements together to create a space; it involves soul - soul of the design space, soul of the client’s desire, soul of the designer’s vision. Interior designer Hanif Mohammed’s approach is one of a master craftsman – inherent skill, accumulated expertise, focused functionality, fine aesthetics… and a great deal of passion.

Being born and raised in a family of architects and interior designers, The ni-born Hanif Mohammed’s inclination to interior design was a given. His accomplishments in the conventional interior design arena have been due to a polished sensibility, as well as an uncompromising dedication towards quality. One of the tenets he holds central to his work ethic is that design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

It all began for Hanif the regular way – academic training at some of the best institutions followed by apprenticeship to reputed professionals on a number of residential and commercial projects. His natural flair for spatial arrangement, ergonomics and applied design resulted in signature work that got quickly noticed. This led to him being given enhanced responsibility for larger and more complex interior projects. He was soon working in collaboration with European brands, also catering to the Middle East and North American markets. As General Manager for one of the largest and first brands in South India to enter the premium modular furniture industry, Hanif was tasked with developing innovative new systems for modular production. A highlight in the early days of his career was the design and development of the European-standard “Dona Rossi” line of high-end modular furniture. Post that, he was further determined to heighten the functionality of the nitty-gritty of modular design.

Some of his pioneering contributions towards enhanced design modules include: the introduction of lightweight honeycomb cores in flat panels to the south Indian market and the development of the first integrated compact pantry system and the five-panel profile wrapped (membrane) shutter system. Ensuring standardization of existing production lines in accordance with European hardware and production systems was another example of Hanif’s well-rounded understanding of the industry.

His portfolio has spanned across sectors – executing furniture and joinery for over 200,000 sq ft of IT spaces, serving as the interface between design and site execution for residential and commercial projects and coordinating interior fit outs for hotel brands across India and in Sri Lanka. More interestingly, he has also worked from different vantage points in the industry – as a designer himself, as a production manager improving production and efficiency, as an innovator of component and systems design, a client representative supervising execution, as a harbinger of state of the art technology and methodology in modular design and now, as an emerging leader in innovative design.
