Cross flow membrane market driving factors include rise in use by end-user segment and increased industrialization. However, factors such as heavy initial investment costs and maintenance are likely to impede the market growth during the forecast period. Cross flow membrane is also known as tangential flow filtration and is a process in which the feed flows parallel or tangentially across the membrane surface rather than perpendicular to it. Cross flow membrane technique is extensively used across various verticals such as pharmaceuticals, power, metal, food, chemicals and oil and gas.

Depending on the application, the membrane used in cross flow filtration is either ceramic or polymeric. Fundamental techniques used in membrane filtration include reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, and nanofiltration. Functionally, in cross flow filtration, a pressured difference across the filter drives the components that are smaller than pores than the filter. Components larger than filter pores are retained and flow back to the feed reservoir.

Characteristics of cross flow membrane include cleaning of filter and recirculation through processing of large volumes of solution. Also, there is a significant difference between cross flow filtration and normal flow filtration.

Cross flow filters use membranes whereas conventional filtration use membranes, paper or other materials such as glass fiber to segregate components in a feed stream. Again, cross flow filtration supports recirculation of the retentate solution and can be recovered directly. Application areas of cross flow filtration includes cell harvesting, cell or lysate clarification, product fractionation, product concentration, and diafiltration.

Reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration(NF) and microfiltration(MF) are the techniques used in cross flow filtration wherein reverse osmosis comprise a high pressure and energy-efficient means of dewatering process streams and concentration of low molecular weight compounds or cleaning waste effluents. Nanofiltration is a genuine form of filtration process in-between UF and RO built to achieve highly specific bifurcation of low molecular weight compounds such as minerals and salts from complex process streams. Ultrafiltration is a separation step used to concentrate and cleanse the medium to high molecular weight components.

The cross flow membrane market is segmented into verticals such as pharmaceuticals, power, metal, food, chemicals and oil & gas. On the basis of geographic segmentation, the cross flow membrane market spans North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Middle-East & Africa. The key players in the cross flow membrane market spans Applied Membrane Tech, Ater-Tek, EMD Millipore, Graver Technologies, Koch Membrane Systems, Pall Corporation, TAMI industries, and Veolia.
