Orthopedic injuries in newborns require quick diagnosis and treatment

Orthopedic injuries like fractures are so painful that even adults require courage to bear them. So imagine how painful it would be for newborns. Orthopedic injuries in the newborn are not uncommon but they can be treated without much complication as well. Generally, Orthopedic Trauma Implants are not required for their treatment. These injuries most commonly occur during birth as the child comes out through the vaginal canal. An overweight child during birth and advanced gestational age make the child more prone to getting orthopedic injuries. Plus, underlying medical issues are also the reason for injuries during birth. Some of the most common orthopedic injuries seen in a newborn include:
Clavicle fractures
Brachial Plexus Injuries (Erb's Palsy)
Growth Plate Fractures
Femur Fractures

One of the frequently occurring orthopedic injuries in newborns is clavicle fractures. A noticeable deformity is seen when this fracture occurs and it makes it easy for the doctors to identify clavicle fracture. It can be treated by strapping the arm to the chest.
Now, when it comes to brachial plexus injury, then it involves the damage to nerves that travel to the arm from the neck. This type of injury is also noticed in newborns and it occurs during childbirth. Surgery is not recommended for its treatment as leaving nerves to heal on their own is the best possible treatment of this condition. Surgery is only suggested if the injury persists after 3 to 6 months.
Growth plate fractures are also seen in infants and children. When this type of fracture occurs, it can be detected by swelling on one of the ends of a long bone. This condition might not show up on X-ray but, healing signs can be seen after weeks. Protecting the injured area and allowing it to heel for a few weeks is the best possible treatment for this condition.
Femur fracture could be seen when the leg of the child awkwardly gets twisted during delivery. As the bones of the infant are soft, the risk of fracture increases. Pain while moving or changing the diaper is the most common symptom of femur fracture. Pavlik harness is applied to heal the fracture, it is applied for around four weeks. This condition is known to be less common than clavicle fractures.
