We talked last time about how elevator estimators respond to a customer’s Request for Quotations (RFQs). Because of the complexity of many RFQs and the time it takes for an architect or construction team to agree on their final design, it can take a lot of effort to get a final order. Usually a job will evolve from an initial proposed design to its final approval. Reasons for the changes vary from redesign of individual specifications, change in the scope of the job, and fluctuating construction costs.

As an estimator, I may also spend time educating the customer on elevator code mandates for the construction of the car or entrances themselves. A request may come in by a customer who doesn’t know exactly how to ask for what is needed. Sometimes the RFQ simply asks for 10 openings without noting any design parameters. Or, a customer doesn’t realize that he’s asked us to build the product in such a way that is either in violation of the codes or impractical from a manufacturing or assembly perspective. That is when our Sales Engineering Department works with the estimator to accurately price a job and to educate the customer and help lead them to the final design.

Another type of challenging job design that requires me to dialogue with the customer is related to high-end remodels, which involve fitting modern materials into older building construction. For example, once a customer didn’t understand how the request for specialized jambs and light-up indicators could interface with the marble walls of an older building. We had to create specialized mock-ups to help the customer understand and truly see how the entrances would fit.

I think this is the fun challenge or our industry, and I find it gratifying to take the time to listen to customers, hammer out all the job specifications, and ultimately build a unique, quality elevator product. The constant challenges and changing market are only a couple of the things that have kept me excited about this industry for so many years.
