Elmhurst, IL, November 8, 2013 – TMJ is the acronym for the Temporomandibular Joint and is also the term used to refer to the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders. This condition results in pain and limited movement of the jaw and surrounding areas. Elmhurst TMJ Dentistry now offers relief for these symptoms by using a small, comfortable dental appliance. This treatment addresses the underlying issue that leads to painful TMJ symptoms.

“The treatment we offer helps alleviate problems that cause TMJD in the first place,” explain Drs. Jerald and Carly Scharfenberg. “Millions of people suffer from TMJ pain, and most do not realize that symptoms can be addressed by their dentist without surgery.

“We use a simple oral appliance that provides a straightforward alternative to traditional TMJ treatments. The non-surgical treatment works by adjusting an unbalanced dental bite, eliminating painful TMJ symptoms. This discreet oral appliance fits comfortably over the patient’s front teeth and can be done right here in our dental office.”

TMJ pain may be the result of injury, arthritis, teeth grinding and clenching or other medical conditions. This places significant stress on the joint, leading to the painful symptoms of TMJ. Traditional TMJ treatments can be involved and costly while others only address the symptoms.

The objective of treatment provided by Elmhurst TMJ Dentistry is to eliminate the underlying cause of the problem. If left untreated, conditions caused by TMJ can cause debilitating chronic pain and eventually lead to deterioration of the joint.

While millions of people suffer from TMJ pain, there is currently no known way to prevent this type of pain from occurring. Most people hesitate to find treatment and may not be aware that a qualified dental professional can provide the solutions that manage the pain and potentially eliminate the cause of the symptoms.
