Understanding How Colonoscopy Can Prevent Colon Cancer

Dr Lee Drinkard explains how the use of a colonoscopy can prevent colon cancer.

Lewisville, TX, August 28, 2019 – Colorectal cancer is a common disease among men and women. A new study estimates 145,600 new cancer cases in 2019 alone in the United States. Going by the statistics, cancer is becoming common each day, with over 1.8 million new cases announced globally in 2018.

"Colonoscopy is the best defense for colon cancer. It involves a physical examination of the different changes in the colon and rectum, says Dr. Drinkard.“We check for any abnormalities within this part of the digestive system.”

Here’s how colonoscopy works:

• The process involves inserting a long tube into the rectum. The tube is typically flexible and contains a tiny video camera. The colonoscopic tube allows the doctor to have a clear view of the colon. The doctor will observe any unusual changes.

• A growth known as a polyp causes colon cancer. A polyp is a form of growth that rarely becomes cancerous, but when it does, it causes the disease to spread to other parts of the body quickly. The process of colonoscopy allows for the removal of polyps. The doctor will also test the polyps to determine whether they are cancerous or not.

• Seeking earlier colonoscopy examination with proper follow-up schedules will make it easier to catch cancer in its early stages before it spreads. Early colorectal cancer detection will give you a chance for effective treatment and cure. If the polyps are detected, they are then removed; helping prevent them from growing to become cancerous.

"Colonoscopy is effective in preventing cancer. It provides useful observations on polyps and what is happening in the colon," says Dr. Drinkard. “The procedure is painless and is performed on an out-patient basis in about 30 minutes.”
