Lewisville, TX, Mar 24, 2019 – Squamous cell lung cancer is a non-small cell lung cancer. Known as epidermoid carcinoma, squamous cell lung cancer begins in the tissues surrounding the air passages in the lungs. This type of cancer is usually located in the large bronchi that connect the trachea with the lung. It causes early symptoms, therefore making it easy to treat.

“Squamous cell carcinoma of the lungs is slow growing and highly asymptomatic,” explained Dr. Dasari. “Most patients don’t pay attention to the obvious physical changes in their body. By the time of diagnosis, the risk of metastasis is already high. Early diagnosis will help to cure the disease in time.”

Here are a few of the tests used in diagnosing squamous cell lung cancer:

• Blood tests – A full blood count will help to reveal disorders and abnormalities in the blood to detect the presence of the disease in the lungs. The counts from a blood sample will estimate the level of blood cells in the blood system. The size, proportion, and the number of cells and the hemoglobin levels are measured.

• Imaging tests – PET and CT Scans will help to identify the tissues affected, their size and location in the body. They will also detect if the tumors are malignant or benign, and the extent of the spread of the disease.

• Urea and electrolytes – This test will help to detect the sodium levels in the blood. A low level of sodium is an indication that there’s an inappropriate secretion of ADH (SIADH) which is a complication of some forms of lung cancer.

• Sputum cytology – Sputum cells will be examined for signs of cancer. This method is most effective in diagnosing squamous cell lung cancer because the nature of the tumor means the cancer cells can show up in cough in sputum.

“Squamous cell lung cancers are largely caused by smoking,” continued Dr. Dasari. "But other causal factors like radon exposure and occupational exposures to toxic gases, fumes, and diesel are important risk factors of this disease. It is important to test regularly if you are at high risk.”
