How Vehicle Tracking becomes crucial for Coastguards & Naval Operations

Apart from this, the location based technology is also used in many industries like logistics, banking, finance and insurance, etc. to track their on-ground vehicular and human assets and to optimize their on-ground operations in the process.

The major water bodies of the world-the seas and oceans, tend to form international borders between some countries. Though this leads to major trade opportunities between countries, opening avenues of exchanging resources they are abundant in and seeking the ones they lack and require, it also creates opportunities for smugglers, illegal immigrants and terrorists to sneak from one country to another by the means of small boats, cargo ships, etc. This may lead to a major loss for the receiving country due to the nature of such elements, if vehicle tracking is not implemented.

Though the navy and coastguards use radars and maritime patrolling as a means of deterrence, the sheer size of ocean makes it open to leaks in the security curtain. Therefore, the advancements in technology should be and have been used to create a leak-proof security barrier which will assist the authorities in asset tracking.

Majority of tracking on such vast scales is through the use of radar technology only and technologies like tracking beacons, satellite tracking etc. assist considerably to minutely track the movement of each vehicle-be it naval, commercial, unidentified or suspicious. This is made possible by the use of location based software technology which is used in sync with radar and satellite data. The data from radars and satellites is extensively analyzed and plotted over a map layer, showing terrain change etc., which allows easy visual analytical ability to monitor, evaluate and intercept target vehicle.

A few advantages of using this technology in maritime operations are as follows:

i.) This data can be easily rallied between the command center (which may be thousands of miles away from the main action point) and the intercepting assets in the ocean, thereby making it easier to take critical decisions without the loss of information.

ii.) The penetration by unwanted entities becomes next to impossible due to complete automation of scrutiny of the area. This also cuts down on lags which usually arise from human errors.

iii.) Planning routes based upon the oceanic terrain and the weather data which can be layered on a map. The ocean can be uncertain in its trends otherwise, but having knowledge of choppy waters beforehand can help plan better.

iv.) Better coordination between various assets: The naval command can use vehicle and asset tracking capabilities to optimize the co-ordination between various vessels and assign missions in an effective manner wherein each asset is utilized in the most efficient manner.

v.) Reduce Piracy: The pirate ships can be tracked and they can either be encountered or avoided altogether, as per the situation.

Therefore, vehicle tracking technology can play a major role in maritime defense and save not only the economic interests of a country but also loves of people, as monitoring is first line of defense.
