No matter how old we are, we love reading about mythology. In fact, modern literature has romanticized mythological creatures to a wonderous level. But every myth has some basis of truth to it, right? Let’s look at some of the most fascinating mythological beings and how they came to be. It’s time to break the bubble!

- Unicorn
Looking at this creature gives you a feeling of simple purity. The first known depiction of a one-horned “unicorn” is commonly said to be found in the ancient Lascaux Caves in France, dating as far back as 15,000 BCE. In actuality, the creature on the cave walls had two horns, but due to the close approximation of the horns in the drawing the original discovers got confused, and the drawings are most likely of a bull or antelope.

- Vampires
Perhaps the most romanticized creatures of modern literature, the origin of these mythological beings came to be from premature burial to the early ignorance of the body's decomposition cycle after death has been cited.

- Werewolves
These beings are the top competitors of vampires when it comes to modern literature. Pitt-Hopkins syndrome, a condition discovered in 1978 that causes lack of speech, seizures, distinct facial features, difficulty breathing and intellectual challenges seems to be the most probable cause of stories of these mythical beings.

- Witches and Wizards
These beings seem to be as old as time themselves. Magicians who can perform tricks have taken the name of witches and wizards in folklore. Sadly—for Harry Potter fans—they do not exist.

- Mermaids and Mermen
A cute half-fish half-human being that can grant wishes is surely a treat for creative writers. Some researchers believe that sightings of human-size ocean animals such as manatees and dugongs might have inspired merfolk legends. These animals have a flat, mermaid-like tail and two flippers that resemble stubby arms.

- Dragons
Fantastical nightmare of most kids, dragons are nothing but a combination of dinosaurs, the Nile Crocodile, and the human imagination.

- Phoenix
This lovely bird from Greek mythology is loved by many. The bird though could symbolize renewal in general as well as the sun, time, the Empire, metempsychosis, consecration, resurrection, and life in the heavenly Paradise.

- Elves and Dwarfs
Their diminutive stature is no comparison for the length of time they have been surviving in folklore. In Old English, elves are most often mentioned in medical texts which attest to the belief that elves might afflict humans and livestock with illnesses: apparently mostly sharp, internal pains and mental disorders.

- Banshee
A keening woman who wails a lament during death in old tradition have heralded the origin of the Banshees found in myths.
