Chew Sticks Whiten Teeth

Chew sticks were a common use in yesteryear to clean and whiten the teeth. For some it was white bark from elm trees and for others it may have been a bone or other item carved to perfection. While it sounds strange it obviously worked and was nothing compared to the Romans, who believed that human urine kept their teeth white and in place. That certainly turns most reader's stomachs, however in a much different form; ammonia is still commonly used in teeth whitening products and mixtures today. Again those products and methods from yesterday might seem barbaric, but they certainly gave way to the abilities and technology that today's dentistry have lent us.

Bristle Brushes

In the olden days toothbrushes were commonly made of a stick or bone that had a make shift set of bristles. These bristles were commonly the hair of pigs or other animals with course hair. Now this might sound disturbing to put in your mouth, but it has always been important to have a good looking smile, healthy teeth and overall oral health. What else were they to use, they used animal parts for everything else, why not to clean and whiten their teeth?
