Understanding the Signs of Inflammatory Breast Cancer

The founder and lead surgeon of the Las Colinas Cancer Center discusses this disease.

Irving, TX – While many women are diligent in their efforts to detect breast cancer by performing regular self-exams and going in for routine screenings, not every form of the disease is easy to find.

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is one such form that may or may not present with noticeable lumps. Even so, it is considered one of the most aggressive forms of the disease and tends to have a lower survivability rate than forms that are easier to detect.

“Women who are diagnosed in stage three of this disease have a median survival period of about 57 months,” explained Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Las Colinas Cancer Center. “With that in mind, it is critical for women and their doctors to understand the signs that may lead to earlier diagnosis of this rare form of breast cancer.”

Dr. Echt says there are a number of symptoms that may signal the presence of IBC. They include:

• Unexplained bruising or rashes on the breast
• Breasts that feel warm or hot to the touch
• Swelling that is unexplained and sometimes dramatic
• Dimpling in a breast
• Seeping in the breast’s skin
• Nipple inversion
• Color changes in the breast
• Itchiness

Any of these symptoms alone may not indicate the presence of IBC, but women who are concerned or who have persistent symptoms should seek medical advice. IBC is typically diagnosed with women in their 50s, but it can strike much earlier. Paying attention to the signs can lead to earlier detection and a greater chance for survivability.

“Since it is rare, IBC is not as well-known to women as other forms of breast cancer,” Dr. Echt says. “Even so, it is critical for women to heed warning signs and take action should they present. Any breast-related concerns should be discussed with a healthcare provider immediately.”
