Irving, TX – People who are serious about lowering their cancer risks might want to say goodbye to alcohol once and for all. A recent study has added to a growing body of evidence that connects alcohol use with certain forms of cancer. Researchers have found that risks may rise even for light to moderate drinkers.

The study in question involved the analysis of 150,000 cases in the United States. Researchers ultimately found that even light drinking raised cancer risks for men and women alike. Women, however, saw their risk rise more than their male counterparts. Men did see an uptick most especially if they happened to smoke as well as drink.

“Overall, the rise in risk was rather small for both men and women, but there was a clear connection found between drinking and elevated cancer concerns,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Las Colinas Cancer Center. “With so many cancer risk factors beyond individual control, the study sheds light on a factor those with a desire to lower risks can change.”

Aside from lowering or eliminating alcohol use, Dr. Echt recommends those interested in lowering personal cancer risks take these steps:

• Refrain from tobacco use
• Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet
• Work exercise into the weekly routine
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Avoid chemical contaminants that are known to cause cancer

“Cancer isn’t always entirely preventable, but people can stack the odds in their favor in some cases,” says Dr. Echt. “Taking steps to live a healthier, more active life can make a difference.”

People who are concerned about cancer risks are advised to discuss the topic with their doctors. Personal healthcare providers can assist in assessing unique risk factors and may have insights on how to lower factors that can be changed through lifestyle alterations.
