How to Properly Store Green Tea?

Posted April 10, 2024 by LBTEAS

Usually, after green tea is stored for a period of time, the aroma, taste, and color will change. The original new tea flavor disappears and the old flavor gradually emerges.

Generally speaking, the shelf life of green tea is generally about one year at normal temperature. However, the main factors that affect the quality of tea are temperature, light, and humidity.

If these factors are reduced or eliminated with proper storage methods, tea can last for a long time. However, if it is not stored properly and the moisture content exceeds the standard due to moisture, it may expire in two months.

In order to avoid unnecessary losses to tea lovers, please note that during the storage of green tea, you must pay attention to moisture, high temperature, light, and oxidation.

Prevent moisture and seal well

Generally, the moisture content of dry green tea should be controlled at 3% to 5%. If the moisture content exceeds 8.8%, green tea will become damp and prone to mildew.

To prevent green tea from getting damp, it is best not to open them until you drink them. Seal the opened green tea well, put desiccant inside the tea leaves, and wrap them as tightly as possible with plastic wrap.

Low-temperature storage and constant temperature are better

Compared with storage at room temperature, the content of green tea water extract stored at low temperature decreases less, and the preservation effect is obvious.

Within 6 months, choose to refrigerate to keep it fresh. The temperature in the refrigerator is generally between 0 and 5°C, which can better maintain the original color and retain the substances that affect the taste.

For storage of more than 1 year, choose freezing to keep fresh. At sub-zero temperatures in the freezer, the oxidation of the tea leaves loses the temperature and humidity conditions, and the internal chemical changes almost completely stop. Green tea will still look like new tea after long-term storage, and the aroma and taste will hardly change.

Special attention:

•When taking out green tea from the refrigerator, you should wait until the temperature of the tea can rises to close to room temperature before opening the can and taking out green tea to avoid the interaction between water vapor in the tea can and the tea.

•Be sure to seal the tea before putting it in the refrigerator.

They are packaged in small cans, tubes, and boxes with good airtightness. As long as they are wrapped in a clean plastic bag, they can be stored directly in the refrigerator. Loose tea should be packaged in aluminum foil bags, and it is best to put an appropriate amount of tea-specific preservative in the sealed bag.

Reduce air contact and squeeze the air out of the bag

Oxygen in the air will oxidize or degrade tea polyphenols, amino acids and other substances in green tea, which will affect the freshness of the tea soup and the color of green tea will also become withered and dull.

When unpacking, do not open the bag too wide to reduce the area in contact with the air. After taking the tea, wrap the remaining green tea in time. Squeeze the air out of the bag first, then seal it with a clip, and then put it in a box or jar.

Do not expose to natural light

Under the influence of light, the chlorophyll b in dry green tea will decrease, causing the color of dry tea to become yellow and dark, affecting the production of normal aromatic substances and producing a stale taste.

Therefore, green tea should be stored away from light, placed in a light-proof box or jar, and covered with plastic wrap.

Finally, it is recommended to buy expensive green tea and drink it immediately. After all, we drink green tea for its freshness and refreshing taste. If the green tea has been opened, it should be stored in an airtight container and should be consumed within two months.
