Irving, TX, Feb 25, 2019 – A breast cancer type is determined by the specific breast cells that are affected. A lot of breast cancers are tumors that begin in epithelial cells lining the tissues and organs all over the body (carcinomas). Adenocarcinoma starts in glandular tissue. Breast cancers often start in the milk ducts or milk-producing glands.
"At times one breast tumor can have different types of breast cancer," explained Dr. Jimenez. "And in rare cases, cancer cells will not present a tumor or lump at all. A biopsy test will confirm the type of breast cancer a patient has, and will also help to check if cancer has already spread to nearby tissues."
Carcinomas are the most prevalent types of breast cancer and are given a name according to where they form and the extent to which they have spread. Below are some of the common types of breast cancer:
• In situ cancers – In situ cancers are non-invasive breast cancers. They include ductal carcinoma in situ (intraductal carcinoma), and lobular carcinoma in situ (lobular neoplasia). Lobular neoplasia is not cancer. In such a case, cells that resemble cancer cells grow in the lobules of milk-producing glands but don't grow through the lobule walls.
• Invasive (infiltrating) breast cancer – These are breast cancers that already spread to nearby breast tissues. The various common types of invasive breast cancers include invasive lobular carcinoma and invasive ductal carcinoma. The cancers can spread to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body. Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most diagnosed invasive breast cancer in women, especially as they grow older. This type of cancer also affects men.
“Every patient’s breast cancer is unique,” continued Dr. Jimenez. “The prognosis and treatment pathway for every patient is influenced by various factors such as the sex and age of the patient, the size of the tumor, and how far it has spread.”
