Appropriate Skin Care for Patients Undergoing Cancer Treatment

Dr. Neeraja Dasari explains the appropriate skin care practices when going through cancer treatment

Irving, TX – One of the effects of many cancer treatments is the loss of hair. Another effect that follows closely is the changes that occur to the skin. Patients will notice that their skin becomes a little more sensitive, it becomes itchy and possibly thinner and dry. Some experience inflammation and reddening that may come with a rash. All these add to the discomfort the patient is already feeling and can be quite a nuisance if not dealt with. The patient’s needs are different from regular skincare and it is important that every patient learns how to treat their skin properly during this time.

“The skin is the largest organ in the body and any discomfort would have a large impact. Taking good care of the skin during cancer treatment reduces this discomfort and prevents further deterioration,” says Dr. Dasari. “It also improves how the skin looks which also helps improve the patient’s mood and self-esteem.”

Some of the skincare changes a patient should incorporate include:

• Be careful of temperature – Temperature extremes may cause more harm than good at this time, no matter how it feels. Patients should avoid hot showers, ice packs, hot water bottles, and even hair dryers. A lukewarm shower is best. This also means restricting exposure to the sun. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, a large hat, and soft clothing that covers large portions of the skin help to keep the sun out.

• Handling – The skin is sensitive and so it should be handled carefully. Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing after taking a bath. Take care not to scratch too much even if it itches.

• Moisture and hydration – The skin is dryer during treatment and requires more moisture and hydration. Drink more healthy fluids such as natural juices and water. A good moisturizer and cream also work to keep the dryness at bay. Perfumed products may cause some irritation and it is best to avoid them.

“At the end of the day, it is not about expensive products and costly regimens. It is about the patient’s comfort. There are low cost products that work well to help with skin issues caused from cancer treatments,” adds Dr. Dasari.
