Pediatric Tooth Decay: Causes, Treatment & Prevention

Tooth decay (cavities) is caused by poor oral hygiene, frequent snacking, and consuming sugary drinks. The best dentist for kids will treat the cavity by dental filling or crown. It can be prevented by maintaining a proper diet and good oral hygiene.

Dubai, UAE - One of the most prevalent dental concerns in young children and toddlers is cavities, also known as decay. A cavity is a permanently damaged region in a tooth and is more common in children than adults. Why does it matter then? Here is the information you need to know about childhood cavities, including prevalent causes, available treatments, and suggestions for prevention.

Causes of Tooth Decay in Children
Plaque builds quickly on the teeth after eating and drinking and the early stages of decay might start if your child doesn’t brush them right away. When your child is not brushing regularly, there is a lack of fluoride - a mineral that occurs naturally and is used as an ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash which aids in the prevention of cavities and can even repair minor tooth damage.

“Of course, poor dental hygiene isn't the only factor contributing to cavities; your child's diet also has an impact. If your child binge eats sugary foods such as candy and soda, it can create a pH imbalance on the surface of their teeth that allows for the growth of cavities,” says Dr. Yasmin Kottait, Pediatric Dentist in Dubai. Refined carbohydrates, such as sugary snacks, are known to increase the risk of tooth decay and cavities. Unrefined carbohydrates, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, are considered healthier options for dental health as they are lower in sugar and provide more nutrients for overall oral health.

Symptoms of Pediatric Tooth Decay
It can be challenging to spot a cavity in your child's tooth as tooth decay doesn't always hurt. Crying or fussiness, white spots on the teeth, dark markings on the teeth, intolerance to cold foods or beverages, eating less, are a few signs that can indicate a potential cavity. Make an appointment with the best dentist for kids if you think your child may have a cavity. They can check your child's teeth for decayed areas and then suggest a course of action based on the severity of the decay.

If you notice any major signs of tooth decay or bleeding gums, contact your pediatric dentist immediately!

How is Pediatric dental decay treated

Saving the tooth is crucial because early tooth loss might affect the way a permanent tooth erupts. Your child's chewing and speaking abilities are also aided by baby teeth. Dentists sometimes place tooth fillings in the teeth of children and toddlers who are as young as 1 or 2 years old. Your Pediatric dentist could suggest a dental crown in cases of serious tooth decay. The baby tooth may occasionally need to be pulled if it is severely decayed or infected. If your Pediatric dentist takes the tooth out, they'll use a space maintainer for the permanent teeth to erupt properly.

Best practices for prevention
One of the most effective ways to prevent cavities in children is by teaching them proper oral hygiene practices. If your child is too young to brush and floss effectively on their own, you need to assist them with these tasks until your child is old enough to brush effectively on their own.

“If your youngster enjoys sweets, provide healthy substitutes to sate their appetites and protect their dental health. Low-glycemic fruit (blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries), frozen bananas and yoghurt, apples, carrots and dip, and are great alternatives to cake, ice cream, cookies, and confectionery,” says Dr. Yasmin.

Encourage your child to drink water instead of sugary drinks like fruit juice, sports drinks, and soda. Water helps to wash away food particles and neutralise acids that can cause tooth decay.

Set a good example for your child by practising good oral hygiene habits yourself. Your child is more likely to adopt good oral hygiene habits if they see you doing the same.

Also, keep in mind that optimal oral hygiene calls for regular checkups. Schedule regular dental check-ups for your child every six months, starting from their first tooth eruption or no later than their first birthday. These visits can help identify early signs of cavities and other dental issues.
