HP kündigte zuletzt ein neues Chromebook mit abnehmbarem Touch-Modul an – das x2. Es kommt mit einem 12,3-Zoll-Touch-Display und wiegt dabei nur 1,4 Kilo inklusive Tastatur; im Tablet-Modus sogar gerade mal 740 Gramm. Der Preis beginnt bei 600 Dollar. Im Inneren arbeiten einen Intel Core m3 Prozessor, wahlweise 4 oder 8 GB RAM und es gibt 32 GB internen Speicherplatz. Außerdem sind Tastatur und Touchpen enthalten. Das HP x2 ist seit Juni in der USA verfügbar. Wir werden diesen Testbericht aktualisieren, sobald wir es getestet haben.Acer kündigte im Mai das Chromebook 13 und Chromebook Spin 13 an. Beide Modelle könnten überzeugende Alternativen zum teuren Pixelbook sein, mit Intel Core Prozessoren, viel Speicher und 13,5-Zoll-Displays im 3:2-Seitenverhältnis. Nachdem nun Android-Apps auf Chrome OS verfügbar sind, haben die Hersteller begonnen, Chrome OS-Tabletts herzustellen und die Flexibilität dieses Betriebssystems zu nutzen. Wir haben das Acer Tab 10 getestet, das erste (und bisher einzige) Chrome OS Tablet. Im Moment ist das Betriebssystem nicht wirklich für den Touchscreen optimiert. Taskleiste und die Browserelemente sind immer noch auf Tastatur und Maus ausgelegt und schwierig zu erreichen – selbst mit dem Touchpen. Das Fehlen einer echten Tastatur (oder wenigstens eines Gboards, Googles exzellenter Touch-Tastatur für Android) macht das Chrome OS besonders schwer navigierbar. Und im Moment ist Chrome OS durch die Existenz von sowohl Chrome OS als auch Android Apps verwirrt. So hatte etwa das Acer Tab 10 zwei verschiedene Versionen der App „Keep“ installiert. Bis sich das Betriebssystem weiterentwickelt hat und besser für den Gebrauch auf Tablets angepasst wurde, raten wir nicht zu Chrome OS-Tablets (als Alternative zu Chromebooks). Wir werden jedoch alle neuen Entwicklungen im Auge behalten.

1) Es ist knifflig: Chrome läuft am besten auf x86-Prozessoren wie denen von Intel, während Android-Anwendungen auf ARM-Prozessoren optimiert sind. Unsere frühen Tests bei zwei Samsung Chromebooks – auf denen Android-Apps laufen – haben das bestätigt: Android-Apps liefen gut auf dem Samsung Chromebook Plus (mit einem ARM-Prozessor), das Chromebook war aber beim normalen Web Browsing recht langsam. Ein Pre-Production Chromebook Pro mit einem Intel-Prozessor hatte anders herum Probleme. Wir hoffen, dass die ARM-Prozessoren zunehmend besser mit Chrome arbeiten werden. Schließlich arbeitet Google, wie auch Apple und Microsoft, hart daran, die ARM-Prozessoren noch leistungsfähiger zu machen.
