The Hidden Dangers of Herpes: Outbreaks on the Nipple Can Critically Endanger Breastfeeding Infants

A baby that becomes infected with herpes through breastfeeding must be treated with an I.V. administration of the antiviral drug Acyclovir, as soon as possible.

A recent survey conducted by polyDNA (October, 2013) found that up to 76% of people are not aware that “An infant…feeding on a nipple with HSV can develop a life-threatening infection (1).” Gene-Eden-VIR, when taken prior to pregnancy, may alleviate some of this risk.

Many women have fears about breastfeeding, owing to the fact that pain is fairly common during the process, and sores may develop—but for women with herpes, there is an additional risk, one which affects both mother and child.

“HSV infection of the nipple or areola can be exquisitely painful and tends to present as miniature vesicles on an erythematous base. Open vesicles carry the virus, and the virus can then be transmitted to the breastfeeding infant. It is critical to rule out HSV in infants … because they can develop a life threatening infection involving the central nervous system (1).”

A baby that becomes infected with herpes through breastfeeding must be treated with an I.V. administration of the antiviral drug Acyclovir, as soon as possible.

Further studies, such as the one reported in the October 2012 edition of the International Journal of Dermatology, have been shedding light on the dangers of breastfeeding when one is infected with herpes. “An infant feeding on a nipple with HSV can develop a life-threatening infection involving the CNS (central nervous system) that will require intravenous acyclovir. …Therefore, it is crucial to confirm the diagnosis of HSV, when clinically indicated, with a viral culture, serology, direct immunofluorescence assay, polymerase chain reaction, or Tzanck smear (2).”

Prevention prior to pregnancy may be a key step in keeping mothers and infants safe. According to Mike Evans of PolyDNA*, “Since a herpes outbreak on a woman’s nipples can look like other infections, we recommend having any sores checked immediately by a doctor. Further, before a woman becomes pregnant, or after she delivers the baby, we recommend taking Gene-Eden-VIR.”

Mike’s recommendation stems from the fact that the active ingredients of Gene-Eden-VIR have been proven safe and effective, as was reported in a recent post-marketing clinical study published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy (“Advances in Antiviral Drugs,” August 12, 2013) and were chosen through an extensive process of scientific elimination involving the careful review of countless medical and scientific journals around the world.
