21 June, New Delhi: Ketomac is an anti-fungal formulation found in shampoos and cream options from ketomac.co.in and retailers countrywide. It is particularly useful for the treatment of dandruff.

Details about the product were revealed to the public by executives of the company in a recent press meet organized in the city.

“Ketomac is basically a formulation of ketoconazole, which is used for mainly for topical application. It is a synthetic, broad-spectrum anti-fungal agent, prepared in a concentration of 2% in a cream/ shampoo base. Ketoconazole is an azole anti-fungal which works by preventing the growth of fungus. It belongs to the same family of drugs like Itraconazole, Miconazole, and Fluconazole,” said an executive.

Ketomac is dandruff treatment shampoo or cream and is made of Ketoconazole that kills yeasts and fungi by interfering with their cell membranes. Its mode of working is by preventing fungi from producing a substance called as ergosterol, which is a vital component of fungal cell membranes. When the Ketoconazole interferes with the production of ergosterol, itdisrupts the function of the fungal cell membrane causing them to become weak. The weak cell membranes permit the content of the cell to leak out, causing its death.

The cell membranes of the fungi are vital for their survival. They keep away unwanted material from entering the cells as well as prevent contents of cells from leaking out. Ketoconazole causes appearance of holes in the cell membranes of fungi which results in leaking out of vital cell content. This destroys the fungi and treats the infection. The main work of Ketomac is to kill fungi on the skin, particularly the scalp, which is called as Malassezia.
